The French bakery chain, which operates more than 850 bakeries, is targeting the UK as part of its international franchising strategy.
French bakery chain, Marie Blachère is seeking franchise partners to enter the UK market, presenting an opportunity for local operators to bring its bakery concept to Britain. The company showcased its franchise opportunity at the National Franchise Exhibition in Birmingham on October 2–3, 2026, as it began engaging with prospective partners.
Owned by Groupe Blachère, Marie Blachère operates a network of more than 850 bakeries and serves approximately 500,000 customers daily. The group reports average annual turnover of €1.5 million per bakery on its international franchise website. However, the company has not announced a UK franchise partner, an initial store location, investment requirements or a confirmed opening date.
Founded in France, Marie Blachère has developed its business around fresh bread, pastries and other bakery products prepared and baked on-site. Its retail model combines traditional baking techniques with accessible pricing and a market-style presentation, allowing customers to view and select products from prominent displays.
The company’s history dates to 1985, when Bernard Blachère established a fruit and vegetable business in Provence. The first Marie Blachère bakery opened in Salon-de-Provence in 2004, marking the group’s expansion into bakery retail. The concept subsequently grew into a major French bakery chain, with international expansion becoming an increasingly important part of its strategy.
The brand has established a presence in several international markets, including Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, the United States and Canada. Its planned UK entry would extend its international reach through partnerships with local operators.
Marie Blachère’s traditional bakery format focuses on bread, pastries and food-to-go products, with production taking place on-site throughout the day. The group also operates Café Marie Blachère, a coffee-shop concept combining coffee, bakery products and light meals. The two formats provide potential franchise opportunities across different retail locations, although the company has not confirmed which format it intends to introduce first in Britain.
According to the group’s franchise website, Marie Blachère bakeries typically occupy 250–350 square metres in city centres and 300–500 square metres in out-of-town locations. Café Marie Blachère outlets generally range from 100–200 square metres in travel-retail locations and 150–200 square metres in city centres and shopping malls.
Franchising is an established component of Groupe Blachère’s expansion strategy. Alongside Marie Blachère and Café Marie Blachère, the group operates other food retail concepts, including Jean Le Gourmand, Pizzette and Mangeons Frais.
The company highlights operational support, training and consistent product standards as elements of its franchise proposition. Its bakery model combines on-site production with a retail offering designed to attract customers throughout the day, while its café format targets demand for coffee, breakfast and convenient food options.
The UK opportunity comes as Marie Blachère seeks partners capable of developing the brand in a new market. The company has not publicly disclosed UK-specific franchise fees, total investment requirements, agreement terms or development targets.
Participation in the National Franchise Exhibition provided the group with a platform to introduce its concept to potential British franchisees. The pace of expansion will depend on partner recruitment, site selection and the development of a market-specific rollout strategy.
