Global coffee leader Starbucks is taking its successful collaboration with Mandopop icon Jay Chou beyond mainland China, launching a regional summer campaign across Asia-Pacific that underscores how global consumer brands are increasingly using cultural partnerships to drive traffic, customer loyalty and brand differentiation.
The “Fantasy” Summer Experience, which debuted in Taiwan on June 20, is rolling out across Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore through the summer. The campaign combines exclusive beverages, limited-edition merchandise and immersive in-store experiences, reflecting Starbucks’ strategy of turning its cafés into lifestyle destinations rather than simply beverage outlets.
For franchise operators and multi-unit retail brands, the initiative demonstrates how globally recognized intellectual property and celebrity collaborations can generate customer excitement while maintaining operational consistency across multiple markets. Although Starbucks operates through a mix of company-owned, licensed and joint venture models across Asia-Pacific, the campaign has been tailored for regional execution while allowing individual markets to introduce exclusive products and experiences.
As part of the collaboration, Chou appears as “Flavour Detective Jay,” recommending three signature Starbucks beverages: the Iced Salted Caramel Americano, Hot Vanilla Latte and Aerocano, which customers can further personalise through Starbucks’ customization platform. The campaign reinforces one of the company’s strongest competitive advantages: beverage personalisation at scale.
Alongside the beverages, Starbucks has launched a collection of limited-edition drinkware and lifestyle merchandise inspired by Chou’s music and creative identity. The collection includes tumblers, cold cups, pouches, keychains and collectible accessories, while selected markets will offer exclusive items such as lyric-inspired keepsakes, vinyl-style cards and market-specific collectibles, encouraging repeat visits and higher average transaction values.
Participating stores will also feature curated playlists of Jay Chou’s music, themed visual merchandising and dedicated experiential spaces designed to deepen customer engagement beyond the traditional café visit.
“Music and coffee both have a powerful way of bringing people together and transporting us to a memory in time,” said Nancy Lo, Vice President, Product and Marketing, Starbucks Asia Pacific. “Through this partnership with Jay Chou, we are celebrating those small, meaningful moments in our day, whether it’s enjoying a favourite beverage or replaying a favourite tune.”
The regional rollout builds on Starbucks China’s collaboration with Chou, introduced in May across more than 8,000 stores. That campaign blended immersive retail experiences with the company’s healthier beverage portfolio, helping reinforce Starbucks China’s ongoing strategy of combining product innovation with cultural relevance.
For the global franchise sector, the campaign highlights a broader trend: international brands are increasingly investing in experience-led marketing rather than relying solely on product launches. By combining localised merchandising, celebrity influence and in-store activation across multiple markets, Starbucks is illustrating how large-scale consumer brands can create campaigns that are both globally recognizable and locally relevant.
