Mega MGC Coffee Races Toward 4,500 Stores Amid Korea’s Café Boom

Date:

South Korean value coffee chain Mega MGC Coffee has reached 4,466 stores, moving closer to the 4,500-store milestone as competition intensifies in one of the world’s most saturated coffee markets.

The company opened its 4,466th store on August 27, 2026, according to Mega MGC Coffee’s official website, putting the chain just 34 locations short of 4,500.

Founded in 2015, Mega MGC Coffee has built its network around affordable pricing, large-sized drinks and a franchise-led expansion model. Its latest growth comes as South Korea’s coffee-shop market has surpassed 100,000 outlets, creating increasingly intense competition between value-focused chains and established premium operators.

Mega MGC Coffee is now one of the country’s largest coffee chains by store count. Ediya Coffee operates more than 4,200 stores, while Starbucks had more than 2,000 locations in South Korea at the end of 2025. Compose Coffee also passed the 3,000-store mark last year.

Despite the crowded market, demand for budget coffee continues to rise. Combined monthly payments at five major value coffee chains, Mega MGC Coffee, Compose Coffee, Paik’s Coffee, Mammoth Coffee Lab and The Venti,  reached 191.6 billion won (about US$138 million) in July 2026, up from 36.3 billion won in January 2021, according to Mobile Index data reported by Seoul Economic Daily. The increase represents a 5.3-fold rise in five years and seven months.

The broader Korean coffee industry has also expanded. Data from South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Rural Economic Institute showed that the domestic coffee industry grew 35.6% to 3.74 trillion won in 2024, from 2.75 trillion won in 2018.

For Mega MGC Coffee, however, continued expansion is increasingly being balanced against franchisee profitability. A company official said the chain is not pursuing growth simply to reach a particular store-count target.

“Rather than pursuing external growth with specific numerical targets, we place the highest priority on the profitability of store owners and mutual growth management,” the official said.

The company said it also assesses potential trading areas before approving new locations in an effort to protect existing franchisees.

“When opening new stores, we closely analyse the commercial area to minimise the impact on the business territory of existing stores, and we review whether both existing and new stores can generate stable profits as a key criterion,” the official added.

The economics of the model have helped underpin Mega MGC Coffee’s growth. South Korean Fair Trade Commission franchise disclosure data reported by Seoul Economic Daily showed that Mega MGC Coffee franchise locations generated average annual sales of 388.44 million won, making it the highest among the budget coffee franchises included in the comparison.

The chain is also expanding its offer beyond coffee as value-focused operators increasingly become part of consumers’ everyday routines. Korean market data shows that budget chains are moving into residential areas, office districts and university neighbourhoods, while broadening menus with food and other products.

Mega MGC Coffee’s domestic growth is also being accompanied by international ambitions. The company opened its first overseas store in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in May 2024, marking the beginning of its expansion outside South Korea.

With 4,466 stores already open, Mega MGC Coffee is now within reach of another major milestone. Its ability to keep adding locations while maintaining franchisee profitability could determine whether the chain can sustain its rapid growth as South Korea’s fiercely competitive coffee market becomes even more crowded.
