Pizza Hut China Turns Existing Stores Into a $149M Burger Growth Engine

Date:

Pizza Hut China is rapidly expanding its burger business by adding Burger Bar modules to existing Pizza Hut restaurants, reaching 300 locations less than a year after launching the concept.

The company expects Pizza Hut’s burger category to generate more than RMB1 billion (about $149 million) in sales in 2026, including burgers sold through both Pizza Hut restaurants and Burger Bar locations. The category is projected to account for around 5%–6% of Pizza Hut China’s sales.

Pizza Hut China launched its first Burger Bar in late 2025 and has since been opening more than one location per day on average. The company is targeting 500–600 Burger Bar locations by the end of 2026, equivalent to around 10% of its nearly 5,000-store Pizza Hut network in China.

Rather than developing Burger Bar as a separate restaurant network, Pizza Hut is placing the compact format alongside existing outlets. The model requires relatively light investment and allows the burger operation to share space, employees, equipment and other resources with the parent restaurant.

“We entered the burger category two years ago with Pizza Dough Burgers, which have been well received by consumers. We are now taking the business to the next level through Pizza Hut Burger Bar, while continuously refining the module to meet the diverse needs of our consumers,” said Jeff Kuai, General Manager of Pizza Hut China.

The Burger Bar menu focuses primarily on beef burgers, with products including the Pineapple and Beef Burger, featuring a Parmesan-and-parsley bun made from Pizza Hut dough. Other offerings include the Teppan-Style Black Pork Burger and Sizzling Grilled Chicken Burger with Egg. The burgers are prepared using hot-griddle cooking in an open kitchen.

The format is designed to reach younger consumers and solo diners, while creating additional occasions beyond Pizza Hut’s traditional group and casual-dining business. In the second quarter of 2026, Burger Bars generated double-digit incremental sales and meaningful profit for their parent Pizza Hut restaurants.

The 300th Burger Bar, opened in Wuhan, Hubei Province, also introduced a limited-edition burger featuring local flavours, a Crayfish Crispy Lotus Root Cheeseburger combining crayfish with crispy lotus root.

The expansion comes as Yum China strengthens its ownership and growth plans for Pizza Hut in Mainland China. Yum China completed its acquisition of ownership of the Pizza Hut brand in the market on August 7, 2026, after operating the brand in China for 36 years. Following the transaction, Pizza Hut has raised its expansion target to more than 800 net new restaurants in each of 2027 and 2028, compared with its previous target of more than 600 annually.

Pizza Hut’s wider network reached 4,549 restaurants as of June 30, 2026, with franchisees operating 11% of the system. During the second quarter, the brand added 174 net new restaurants, including 70 opened by franchisees. Yum China has also set a 40%–50% franchise mix for net new Pizza Hut stores in 2026.

The Burger Bar rollout gives Pizza Hut another way to increase sales from its existing restaurant footprint while testing a new format with lower incremental investment. It also demonstrates how established franchise and restaurant networks can be leveraged to introduce adjacent concepts without immediately creating a separate store base.
