Starbucks Rewards Revamp Triggers Customer Backlash Over Tier Changes

Date:

Starbucks is facing a wave of customer criticism following the rollout of its revamped Starbucks Rewards loyalty program, as long-time members expressed frustration over changes to tier qualifications and the return of the controversial “Gold” status structure.

The coffee giant recently introduced a redesigned loyalty framework aimed at strengthening customer engagement and encouraging higher spending across its global network. The updated program introduces a three-tier system- Green, Gold and Reserve, replacing the simpler structure that had been in place for several years.

Under the new model, members earn “Stars” based on spending, which determine their tier level and access to rewards. Customers start at the Green tier and can move up to Gold and Reserve by accumulating higher numbers of Stars within a year. Higher tiers come with additional benefits such as faster Star accumulation, non-expiring rewards, bonus promotions and exclusive offers.

However, the rollout quickly drew criticism from loyal customers, particularly those who previously enjoyed Gold status under earlier versions of the program but found themselves moved to a lower tier under the new rules.

Nostalgia for the Original Gold Card

The backlash is partly driven by nostalgia for the brand’s original Gold Card, a physical membership card that once symbolised elite status among Starbucks’ most loyal customers. Although the card itself disappeared years ago as the company moved toward a digital app-based rewards system, the idea of “Gold” status remained a strong emotional touchpoint for many customers.

With the new structure reinstating tier requirements tied to annual spending, many users discovered they would need to spend significantly more to regain or maintain Gold-level benefits. Social media reactions highlighted confusion over qualification thresholds and dissatisfaction with what some customers perceived as reduced value.

Loyalty Program Central to Growth

Starbucks’ rewards ecosystem remains one of the largest in the restaurant industry and plays a central role in driving repeat visits. The company has previously reported tens of millions of active loyalty members in the U.S., with rewards users accounting for a significant share of transactions through the Starbucks mobile app.

The latest redesign is part of Starbucks’ broader strategy to deepen digital engagement and personalise offers through its data-driven loyalty platform. The company has positioned the update to provide more tailored rewards and premium experiences for frequent customers.

While Starbucks operates a mix of company-owned and licensed stores globally, the reaction highlights the risks brands face when altering loyalty systems that customers have become deeply attached to.

For franchise-heavy restaurant and retail networks, loyalty programs are increasingly a core tool for driving repeat business. The Starbucks episode shows that even well-intentioned changes can trigger backlash if customers perceive that long-standing benefits are being reduced or made harder to achieve.
