Birkenstock, a Germany-based footwear brand known for its ergonomically designed sandals, shoes and foot care products built around its signature contoured cork footbed, has expanded its presence in Japan with the launch of its first flagship concept store in Osaka’s Shinsaibashi district.
Opened on April 3, the two-storey store is located at Shinsaibashisuji in Chuo-ku, one of Japan’s busiest retail corridors and marks the brand’s first permanent flagship presence in Osaka, the country’s second-largest city.
Spanning two floors, the flagship is among the largest street-level retail spaces for the brand in Japan and is designed as a full brand destination, offering its core sandal and clog collections alongside premium lines such as 1774 and its Care Essentials range.
The store’s design reflects Birkenstock’s craftsmanship-led identity, featuring natural materials such as cork, earthen textures and custom wooden installations by artist Naruki Takahashi. The layout is intended to create a slower, more immersive shopping experience aligned with the brand’s “walking as nature intended” philosophy.
The ground floor houses a dedicated space for foot and body care products, while the upper level showcases a wide assortment of footwear, from iconic silhouettes to newer styles across categories.
The Osaka opening builds on Birkenstock’s growing presence in Japan, following earlier concept stores in Tokyo and Nagoya, as the brand continues to deepen its footprint in high-visibility retail destinations across Asia.
