Malaysia is strengthening its position as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing franchise markets, with government leaders and industry stakeholders increasingly backing franchising as a key pillar for entrepreneurship, SME growth and job creation.
The country’s franchise industry has emerged as a major contributor to the economy, with Malaysian leaders recently stating that the sector has the potential to make the nation a regional franchising powerhouse. The government has also set an ambitious target of achieving RM100 billion in franchise sales by 2030 through international expansion, innovation and ecosystem development.
According to Datuk Ewon Benedick, Malaysia’s Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, the franchise sector is expected to play a significant role in strengthening local entrepreneurship and expanding Malaysian brands internationally.
Malaysia’s franchise ecosystem spans foodservice, education, healthcare, retail, logistics, wellness, tourism and professional services, reflecting the diversification of the model beyond traditional quick-service restaurants. According to recent government statements, the industry contributed more than RM36 billion to the national economy in 2022.
Among the strongest examples of franchise-led growth in the country is McDonald’s Malaysia, which continues to expand aggressively through franchising and restaurant development initiatives.
According to the company’s official franchising platform, McDonald’s Malaysia has resumed sub-franchising activities in Peninsular Malaysia while continuing expansion across East Malaysia. The company requires franchisees to undergo a structured 12–18 month training programme before operating restaurants.
The brand has also unveiled a RM1 billion investment plan over five years aimed at opening 100 new restaurants, modernising outlets and strengthening digital infrastructure across the country.
Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia, said the company remains focused on nationwide growth, youth employability and long-term workforce development as part of its expansion roadmap.
Malaysia’s franchising ambitions are also being supported through industry platforms such as Franchise International Malaysia (FIM), organised by the Malaysian Franchise Association in collaboration with government agencies and ASEAN partners.
As global and regional brands continue to explore ASEAN expansion opportunities, Malaysia is increasingly positioning itself as a strategic hub for franchise-led business growth in the region.
