Angry Crab Shack Targets 100 Restaurants by 2030 with Aggressive Franchise Expansion

Date:

Arizona-based seafood restaurant franchise Angry Crab Shack is accelerating its domestic and international franchise growth strategy, targeting 100 operating restaurants by 2030 as it expands across key U.S. markets and strengthens its presence overseas, led by continued momentum in the United Kingdom.

Founded in 2013 by former NFL player Ron Lou, Angry Crab Shack has grown into a 27-unit full-service restaurant brand known for its customizable Asian-Cajun seafood boils. The company began franchising in 2016 and has positioned itself as a scalable casual dining concept for multi-unit operators through standardized operations, second-generation real estate conversions, and a relatively low initial investment compared with many full-service restaurant concepts.

The latest expansion initiative comes as seafood consumption in the United States continues to benefit from growing consumer demand for healthier dining options. The company believes these market trends, coupled with increasing interest in experiential dining, provide a strong foundation for continued growth both domestically and internationally.

According to the company’s latest franchise disclosure, the top 50% of affiliate-owned and franchised restaurants generated average annual net sales (Average Unit Volume) of nearly US$3.9 million during calendar year 2025, while the same group achieved an average EBITDA of approximately US$528,000, highlighting the concept’s unit-level economics. The performance figures are disclosed in Item 19 of the company’s Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) and represent historical results that are not guarantees of future performance.

The company currently operates 27 locations and plans to open additional restaurants in the coming months as part of an aggressive franchise recruitment campaign. Domestically, Angry Crab Shack is seeking franchise partners across Florida, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Internationally, the brand is targeting expansion in Brazil, Mexico, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, while continuing to build its footprint in the United Kingdom, which the company views as a springboard for broader European growth.

One of the key drivers of the international strategy is franchise partner Bruce Li, who recently opened the brand’s second restaurant in London alongside Operations Director Lucy Liang and General Manager Sonia Sheng. “Our first two locations have been a tremendous success. Angry Crab Shack offers our guests a fun and memorable dining experience with a menu that is unique to the European market,” Li said.

The company is also leveraging endorsements from existing franchisees as it pursues new development agreements. Mark May, a two-time Super Bowl champion and multi-unit franchise partner who owns three Angry Crab Shack restaurants in Arizona and one in Nevada, said the economics of the business continue to support his expansion plans. “You almost get your entire investment back in two years on one store; that’s amazing and unheard of, particularly in the restaurant business,” May said, adding that he intends to open additional locations.

Angry Crab Shack attributes much of its development strategy to its second-generation site model, which allows franchisees to convert existing restaurant spaces instead of developing new buildings from the ground up. According to the company, the approach reduces build-out costs and shortens development timelines while maintaining operational consistency through standardized kitchen systems and restaurant layouts.

The company reports a median initial investment of approximately US$596,000 for the 12 franchised restaurants opened during 2025 using second-generation sites, although total investment requirements vary depending on location and site conditions as outlined in its Franchise Disclosure Document.

Beyond expansion, Angry Crab Shack continues to emphasize community engagement as part of its brand identity. Since its founding more than a decade ago, the company says it has contributed more than US$2 million to charitable initiatives and community organizations, continuing a commitment established by founder Ron Lou to support local communities where the brand operates.

With a growing international footprint, improving unit economics, and expansion opportunities across multiple continents, Angry Crab Shack is positioning itself for its next phase of growth as it works toward its goal of becoming a 100-unit global restaurant franchise by the end of the decade.
