The upgraded flagship introduces an open-kitchen concept and expanded menu as parent company Tam Jai International develops its restaurant portfolio across Asia-Pacific through company-operated, joint-venture and franchise models.
Hong Kong-based TamJai Yunnan Mixian has unveiled an upgraded flagship restaurant at MCP Discovery in Tseung Kwan O, marking the brand’s 30th anniversary with a refreshed dining concept. The development comes as its parent company, Tam Jai International, continues to build its presence across international markets through a combination of directly operated restaurants, joint ventures and franchise partnerships.
The revamped restaurant introduces an open-kitchen format, allowing customers to watch the preparation of its signature Yunnan rice noodles, or mixian. It also features made-to-order grilled skewers, prepared by restaurant staff known as ‘Jeh Jehs’, adding a new element to the brand’s established noodle-focused menu.
Customers can continue to customise their dishes through the brand’s selection of broths and 10 spice levels, retaining the personalised dining proposition that has been central to TamJai Yunnan Mixian since its launch.
Founded in Hong Kong in 1996, the brand has spent three decades developing its position in the city’s competitive quick-service restaurant market. Its expansion beyond Hong Kong began with its entry into Mainland China in 2021, followed by further international development under the TamJai Mixian banner.
Franchise-led International Expansion
The upgraded flagship is part of a wider development story for Tam Jai International, which operates a portfolio of restaurant brands across seven markets: Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
As of September 30, 2026, the group operated a network of 262 restaurants globally. The majority remain company-operated, particularly in Hong Kong, while its international presence includes joint ventures and franchise arrangements.
The group’s overseas expansion has increasingly involved local operating partners. Its joint venture and franchise network includes two restaurants in Australia, three in Malaysia and one in the Philippines. The company has also established a presence in Japan and Singapore through its directly operated network.
Tam Jai International’s international growth strategy centres on taking its Hong Kong-developed noodle concepts into markets where demand for Asian food formats continues to create opportunities for restaurant operators and local partners.
Its portfolio includes TamJai Yunnan Mixian, TamJai SamGor Mixian and TamJai Mixian. The group also operates international restaurant brands through franchise and licensing arrangements, including Marugame Seimen and Yakiniku Yamagyu in Hong Kong.
The distinction between the group’s operating models is significant. While its Hong Kong business is predominantly company-operated, partnerships and franchise arrangements provide an additional route to international expansion without relying exclusively on direct investment in every market.
Thirty Years of Brand Development
The 30th anniversary provides an opportunity for TamJai Yunnan Mixian to refresh its restaurant proposition while retaining the product identity that has supported its growth. The upgraded flagship combines an open-kitchen experience with menu additions, potentially offering a format that can be adapted as the brand develops in different markets.
For Tam Jai International, the longer-term opportunity lies in developing its restaurant concepts for different customer markets while working with local partners who understand regional operating conditions.
The latest flagship opening is a brand-development initiative rather than a newly announced franchise agreement. Nevertheless, it highlights how established Asian restaurant operators are evolving their formats as they pursue growth across international markets.
