Private equity giant KKR has struck a deal to acquire fast-growing bakery franchise Nothing Bundt Cakes from Roark Capital in a transaction valued at more than $2 billion, including debt, according to multiple reports.
The deal marks a significant monetisation for Roark, which acquired the Dallas-based brand in 2021 and rapidly scaled its footprint through franchising. Since then, the chain has added hundreds of locations, taking its network to over 600 bakeries across the United States and Canada, underlining the strength of its asset-light, franchise-led model.
Founded in 1997, Nothing Bundt Cakes has built a strong niche in the specialty dessert segment with its customisable bundt cakes across multiple flavours and formats. Its franchise-heavy structure has been central to its growth, offering consistent royalty income and predictable cash flows, traits that continue to attract private equity interest.
The brand is now approaching $1 billion in systemwide sales, making it one of the most scaled bakery franchise concepts in North America. It is observed that such franchise systems are increasingly viewed as resilient investments due to their ability to expand quickly without heavy capital deployment at the corporate level.
For KKR, the acquisition signals a deeper push into consumer and franchise-led food platforms, an area where it has been relatively selective. The firm had previously invested in India-based cloud kitchen operator Rebel Foods, but this deal represents a more traditional franchise play with established unit economics and nationwide brand recognition.
The transaction also reflects ongoing consolidation across the restaurant and franchise sector, where private equity firms continue to back scalable, brand-driven concepts. Roark itself remains one of the most active investors in franchising, with holdings spanning major chains such as Subway, Dunkin’, and Arby’s.
KKR and Roark have not publicly disclosed detailed financial terms or timelines for closing, and both firms declined to comment in initial reports.
