Bed Bath & Beyond Re-enters California, Speeds Retail Revival

Date:

Bed Bath & Beyond is set to open stores in California, marking a significant reversal of its earlier decision to avoid the state, as the retailer accelerates its physical retail comeback across the United States.

The move forms part of the brand’s broader revival strategy under Beyond, Inc., which has been reintroducing the banner through a mix of smaller-format stores, strategic partnerships and an omnichannel-first operating model.

The development stands in contrast to the company’s position in 2025, when Marcus Lemonis had publicly ruled out California as a retail destination. At the time, Lemonis cited high operating costs, regulatory complexity and overall business risk as key deterrents, even as the company outlined plans for a nationwide brick-and-mortar return.

Instead, the company had said it would continue to serve California consumers through e-commerce and delivery, while prioritising physical expansion in more cost-efficient markets.

From Bankruptcy to Brand Revival

Bed Bath & Beyond’s re-entry into expansion follows its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in April 2023, which led to the closure of its entire store network across the U.S.

The brand’s intellectual property was subsequently acquired by Overstock.com, which later rebranded as Beyond, Inc. and pivoted the business to an online-first model before gradually reintroducing physical retail.

Founded in 1971, Bed Bath & Beyond was once among North America’s largest home goods retailers before declining sales, merchandising missteps and mounting debt triggered its collapse.

New Format, New Playbook

The company began testing its physical comeback in 2025 with the launch of “Bed Bath & Beyond Home” stores, starting in Nashville. The new format marks a clear departure from its legacy big-box footprint, focusing on smaller, more agile stores with curated assortments and deeper integration with digital platforms.

A key pillar of the strategy is partnership-led growth, including store conversions with operators such as Kirkland’s, enabling faster rollout with lower capital intensity.

Outlining the approach, Marcus Lemonis, Executive Chairman, Beyond, Inc., said: “We are not going back to the old model. The future of Bed Bath & Beyond is about being disciplined in how we grow, partnering where it makes sense, and building a business that is both capital-efficient and customer-first.”

A spokesperson for Beyond, Inc. added: “Our approach to physical retail is intentional and measured. We are focused on the right markets, the right partners, and formats that allow us to serve customers seamlessly across channels.”

On the brand’s repositioning, the company stated: “Bed Bath & Beyond is being rebuilt for today’s retail environment, blending digital convenience with physical discovery in a way that is scalable and sustainable.”

California Re-entry Signals Strategic Shift

The decision to enter California signals a shift from earlier caution to a more pragmatic growth strategy as the new store model gains traction.

Despite higher operating costs, California remains one of the most significant home goods markets in the U.S., and its inclusion is expected to play a critical role in rebuilding a meaningful national footprint.

For the franchise and retail ecosystem, the move underscores a broader shift toward asset-light, partner-led expansion, increased use of store conversions, and omnichannel integration as a core growth driver.

As Bed Bath & Beyond accelerates its comeback, its performance in high-cost markets like California will be closely watched as a test of the scalability and resilience of its new retail model.
