PureGym is accelerating its global expansion strategy with a sharp focus on the United States, following strong financial performance and the integration of Blink Fitness.
Headquartered in Leeds, UK, PureGym was founded in 2009 by Peter Roberts and has grown into one of Europe’s largest fitness operators. The company operates a low-cost, no-contract, 24/7 gym model, built around flexible memberships and digitally enabled access.
Backed by Leonard Green & Partners, PureGym has expanded across multiple international markets, including the UK, Denmark, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US. The group now operates over 600 gyms globally, serving more than 2 million members, with the UK remaining its largest market.
Recent performance reflects strong momentum, with growth driven by new site openings, rising membership, and increased spend per user. The company added over 100 gyms in 2024 alone, underlining the pace of its expansion.
PureGym’s push into the US market is anchored in its $121 million acquisition of Blink Fitness, completed in November 2024. The transaction included corporate operations and up to 67 locations across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, giving the company immediate scale in the world’s largest fitness market.
Following the deal, PureGym’s US footprint expanded rapidly to nearly 60 gyms and over 300,000 members, compared to just three sites previously.
The company is currently rebranding and upgrading Blink Fitness locations, with plans to transition them to the PureGym brand and roll out its 24/7, tech-enabled operating model across the portfolio.
The Blink acquisition is viewed as a transformational step in PureGym’s international strategy, positioning the United States as a core long-term growth market. The company is expected to scale further through new openings, operational improvements, and potential franchise partnerships.
At the same time, PureGym continues to expand across Europe and the Middle East, with plans to open dozens of new sites annually across existing and new markets.
With a scalable low-cost model, strong financial backing, and rising global demand for affordable fitness, PureGym is positioning its US operations, anchored by Blink Fitness, as a central pillar of its next phase of global growth, with ambitions to build a significant presence in North America over the coming decade.
