Tutu School Hits 125 Locations as Children’s Ballet Franchise Expands Globally

Date:

Tutu School, a children’s ballet and creative-movement franchise founded by former professional ballerina Genevieve Custer Weeks in 2008, offers classes for children aged six months to eight years, blending ballet, storytelling, music and imaginative play. The brand has now surpassed 125 locations across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., driven by continued double-digit same-store sales growth at mature studios and growing demand for screen-free children’s activities.

The company describes its model as a “joy-first” approach to ballet, using dance to develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong interest in movement rather than focusing exclusively on technical skills, competition or performance. Its programmes are designed specifically for young children, with ballet taught through age-appropriate classes, creative movement and storytelling.

“After my career as a professional ballerina, I wanted to create the kind of first ballet experience I believed every child deserved, one rooted in imagination, encouragement and joy rather than pressure or perfection,” Weeks said.

Tutu School’s growth comes as the brand expands its franchise network and seeks additional entrepreneurs to develop studios in North America and international markets. The company began franchising in 2012, and its franchise model is built around locally owned boutique studios rather than large-format dance facilities.

Franchisees receive support across areas including site selection, training, marketing, technology, studio launch and ongoing operations. The concept is designed for owners interested in operating a community-based children’s enrichment business.

The franchise opportunity has also expanded significantly alongside the network. FDD-based data from the brand’s 2025 filing shows an estimated initial investment of $115,000 to $216,000, including a $48,000 initial franchise fee. The same filing reports a 5% royalty and a marketing contribution, although prospective franchisees should rely on the current FDD for the exact fee structure applicable to a new agreement.

The 2025 FDD data also recorded 97 total units, including 93 franchised and four company-owned locations, compared with 74 franchised units in 2023, highlighting the pace of the franchise system’s expansion before the company’s latest international growth milestone.

Tutu School’s current footprint of more than 125 locations is therefore substantially larger than the unit count disclosed in the earlier FDD, reflecting continued expansion into 2025 and 2026. The company’s latest announcement specifically identifies the U.S., Canada and the U.K. as its markets.

The brand is also positioning itself within the broader children’s enrichment market. Through its Generation Real Project involvement, Tutu School says it is part of a group of youth-focused organisations promoting movement, creativity, connection and confidence away from digital screens. The initiative collectively reaches more than one million children annually, according to the company.

Tutu School has further developed its focus on child wellbeing through the Pirouette Council, bringing together specialists from ballet, wellness, nutrition and advocacy to advise on how early dance experiences can contribute to confidence, belonging and wellbeing.

For franchisees, the appeal extends beyond operating a dance studio. Tutu School is targeting entrepreneurs who want to combine business ownership with a community-focused service for young families. Its boutique format also allows the brand to enter local markets without the footprint associated with larger recreational or entertainment concepts.

The company’s expansion comes as parents continue to seek structured, in-person activities that encourage physical movement, creativity and social interaction. Tutu School’s positioning around early childhood, rather than advanced dance training, gives it a distinct place within the children’s education and enrichment franchise segment.

“As we enter new communities, we remain focused on protecting the quality, culture and personal connection families expect from every studio,” said Jen Alexander, Head of Marketing and Development at Tutu School.

With more than 125 locations across three countries, Tutu School is now moving into its next phase of growth, with further franchise development planned across North America and international markets while the company seeks to maintain the boutique, locally connected character of its studios.
