Value fashion retailer ‘Primark’ is entering a new phase of global growth as it looks to increase brand visibility, expand its footprint in the United States and open a major flagship store in New York City. Long regarded by industry observers as one of retail’s best kept secrets, the company is now working to strengthen its international profile while continuing to rely on its store driven retail model.
Owned by Associated British Foods, Primark has built its reputation by offering affordable fashion, footwear, accessories and home products through large format stores. The retailer operates more than 470 stores across 17 markets worldwide and employs tens of thousands of people across Europe and North America.
Leadership Change Signals New Phase
The retailer recently confirmed Eoin Tonge as Chief Executive Officer, following a leadership transition after the departure of former CEO Paul Marchant. The change in leadership comes at a time when the brand is accelerating international growth and looking to raise awareness in markets where it remains less recognised despite its scale.
Primark has traditionally relied on its strong value proposition and large store formats rather than heavy advertising. However, the company is now increasing its focus on brand visibility as it expands into new markets.
U.S. Expansion Becomes A Priority
The United States has emerged as a key growth market for Primark. The retailer currently operates more than 20 stores across several states including Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas. The company aims to significantly grow its footprint in the country over the coming years, with plans to reach around 60 locations nationwide.
Primark has been steadily adding new locations in major retail centres and malls, positioning itself as a value fashion alternative in a market dominated by both fast fashion chains and online retailers.
New York Flagship to Boost Brand Presence
As part of its expansion strategy, Primark is preparing to open a flagship store near Herald Square in New York City. The location places the retailer in one of the world’s busiest shopping districts, surrounded by major department stores and international fashion brands.
The flagship store is expected to serve as a key showcase for the brand in the U.S., helping attract both local shoppers and international visitors.
Unlike many fast fashion competitors, Primark has historically avoided large scale e- commerce operations. The company instead focuses on driving traffic to its physical stores where customers can browse extensive ranges of apparel and lifestyle products at competitive prices.
At the same time, the retailer has begun introducing digital tools such as click and collect services and mobile apps in some markets to support its store network and improve convenience for customers.
Franchise Partnerships Open New Markets
Beyond Europe and North America, Primark is also exploring expansion through partnerships. The retailer recently entered the Middle East through a franchise agreement with Alshaya Group, with stores opening in cities such as Dubai and Kuwait City.
The collaboration marks Primark’s first major franchise led expansion and could pave the way for further growth in international markets.
Despite generating billions in annual revenue and operating hundreds of stores worldwide, Primark remains relatively under recognised in some global markets. With a new Chief Executive, ambitious U.S. expansion plans and a high profile New York flagship in the pipeline, the retailer is positioning itself to move beyond that reputation and establish a stronger global brand presence.
