Lawson, a Japanese convenience store chain known for ready to eat meals, fresh coffee and daily essentials, has announced plans to build a 10,000 store network in India by 2050, marking one of the most ambitious long term expansion blueprints by a global convenience retailer in the country.
The chain currently operates more than 7,000 stores across five overseas markets including China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, is looking beyond its saturated domestic market for growth. India is being positioned as a future earnings pillar alongside China as part of Lawson’s broader strategy to double its overseas store base to around 14,000 outlets by fiscal 2030.
The company will enter India in 2027 with five directly operated pilot stores in Mumbai. These company run outlets will help establish operating standards, merchandising mix and supply chain systems before a wider rollout. Lawson plans to scale to 100 stores by 2030, after which expansion is expected to accelerate through franchise and licensing partnerships.
To support the entry, Lawson will set up a wholly owned Indian subsidiary in fiscal 2026 to oversee site selection, merchandising strategy and brand governance. Production and distribution will be outsourced to local partners, aligning with a capital light expansion model that supports franchise growth and local sourcing efficiencies.
The India push is expected to be largely franchise led over time, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and regional partners as the network scales. India’s convenience retail sector remains under penetrated compared to East and Southeast Asia, providing significant headroom for organised formats in dense urban catchments.
Lawson plans to tailor its product mix to Indian consumer preferences. While signature Japanese offerings such as onigiri rice balls, ready to eat meals, freshly brewed coffee and oden hot dishes will feature in stores, the assortment will include expanded vegetarian, meat free and egg free options to reflect local dietary and religious considerations.
The retailer is jointly owned by Mitsubishi Corporation and KDDI. With strong financial backing and experience in scaling across Asia, Lawson’s long term India roadmap signals a significant new chapter in the country’s organised convenience retail and franchise landscape.
