Ohio based Barry Bagels is making its first foray into South Carolina, signing a three- unit agreement to bring its bagel and deli concept to the Columbia area.
The brand, founded in 1972 in Toledo, Ohio, began franchising in 2015 and currently operates 22 locations across the Midwest. The South Carolina expansion is part of a broader national growth strategy that also includes deals in Iowa and Texas.
The deal will be led locally by franchisee Carol Kurtz, a former Ohio resident familiar with the brand. Kurtz has prior franchise experience, having previously owned a Gymboree Play & Music location, and plans to open her first Barry Bagels unit within the next year.
Barry Bagels CEO James Nusbaum highlighted the brand’s hub and spoke model, which allows flexibility for franchisees to operate smaller units efficiently while maintaining product quality. Hub locations typically range from 1,400 to 2,200 square feet, with spoke units between 800 and 1,300 square feet.
“This deal fits perfectly,” Nusbaum said. “Carol Kurtz is a talented owner who will provide a great experience to customers and employees alike. We want franchisees who are committed to serving the public and providing a strong workplace.”
The Columbia market, the second largest city in South Carolina with over 136,000 residents, is expected to support three to five stores. Barry Bagels plans to support new openings with marketing and social media campaigns to build local awareness.
The initial investment for a Barry Bagels franchise ranges from 99,000 dollars to 514,000 dollars, making it accessible for experienced operators seeking multi-unit opportunities.
With the South Carolina expansion underway, Barry Bagels continues to grow beyond its Midwest roots, bringing its fresh bagels and deli offerings to new regions.
