H&H Bagels Scales Los Angeles Footprint, Taps into West Coast Breakfast Boom

Date:

New York’s iconic bagel institution H&H Bagels is accelerating its California play, opening a second Los Angeles outlet in Echo Park this week, as legacy East Coast brands tap into surging demand for authentic, kettle-boiled bagels on the West Coast.

The Echo Park location marks the brand’s latest step in a broader national expansion strategy, following its Santa Monica debut in early 2025. Founded in 1972 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, H&H built its reputation on traditional recipes and pop culture visibility and continues to replicate that core offering across new markets.

The Los Angeles stores, operated by local franchise partner Phil Gross, will mirror the original menu, featuring classic bagel varieties alongside signature sandwiches such as bacon, egg and cheese, smoked salmon, and vegetable-forward options.

The move comes amid a broader shift in the US bakery landscape, with New York-style bagels gaining traction across California, driven by consumer appetite for authenticity and premium breakfast formats. Expansion plays by both legacy operators and newer entrants signal intensifying competition in a category once dominated by regional players.

Beyond bagels, Los Angeles’ dining scene continues to evolve with new format additions. Darling, the West Hollywood restaurant from chef Sean Brock, is set to launch a weekly Sunday brunch service starting April 5. The offering will include Southern-inspired dishes such as fried chicken and breakfast plates, alongside a dedicated cocktail program.

Elsewhere in the city, legacy operators face pressure. Cole’s, one of LA’s historic French dip institutions, is reportedly exploring a sale after a final weekend of collaborative service, reflecting ongoing churn in the market.

At the same time, new concepts continue to enter the fray. Pontu has opened with a menu centred on Peruvian rotisserie chicken, underscoring the city’s continued appetite for globally influenced fast-casual formats.

For H&H Bagels, the Los Angeles expansion is less about novelty and more about portability, proving that a tightly defined, heritage-driven product can travel across coasts without losing its identity, even as competition in the premium breakfast segment intensifies.
